Hope through Education

Hope through Education
“I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” Stephen Grellet

Bethlehem Creche

The Bethlehem Creche, established in 1954 in Wanathamulla (a poverty striken area in the heart of Colombo) helps care for children aged 1 to 5 irrespective of their racial and religious backgrounds. This is a day care centre run by Apostolic Carmelite nuns and assists 75 to 85 infants and children from low income families. The fathers of these children are either in prison or have deserted them due to various vices including drugs, alcohol or worse. The mothers have to fend for themselves and their children by undertaking menial jobs.

The children need to be clothed, fed, given medical attention and nursery education. Currently, the Street Child Project is teaching Spoken English to children between the ages of 4 and 5. The children enjoy reciting poems, reading picture books and singing nursery rhymes. This is the first task undertaken by the volunteers of the Street Child Project. We have had generous donors contribute towards the purchase of English books to be used in the coming months.
