We were back at Sneha Child Development Centre for the fourth week running. The chaos has considerably lessened and the children seem to enjoy seeing us come back every week. In fact, they exclaim in delight, "You've come back to teach us". So here's something we learnt about one of the kids at the centre. A beautiful little girl, just 4 years old with no mother and a drug addict for a father was removed from her home due to unsuitable living conditions and placed at Sneha a couple of years ago. The father has never visited her once since she was removed from her own home. In the meantime, a childless couple had shown great interest in adopting this little girl. They had started legal adoption proceedings and had almost come to the end of it, when the biological father, still her legal guardian, demanded 1.5 million rupees in exchange of terminating his parental rights. This man had placed a price tag on his child. The adoption proceedings were immediately stopped by the couple who were devastated, but not willing to give in to the demands of a drug addict wanting to swap his daughter for a couple of million. This story is heartbreaking, but it has made us more determined to continue serving underpriviledged children in our community.
"We ourseleves feel what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop"
Mother Teresa
The Orphan Child Project aims to teach English to children in Orphanages and poverty stricken areas in and around Sri Lanka. We believe that the quality of education a person receives in early life is indispensable in bringing out that person’s potential, and that all children should have access to quality learning and care.
Hope through Education
“I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” Stephen Grellet

Bethlehem Creche - An Update
The children at the Bethlehem Creche have shown great improvement since we started teaching them English nearly two months ago. They learn several poems each week and recite their favorite one the following week. This is certainly encouraging to the volunteers of The Street Child Project knowing our time and energy are being put to good use. They enjoy reading picture and word books and take turns in twos and threes repeating what they have just learnt. Their enthusiasm and passion for learning a language that is foreign to them is incredible and it gives us great hope!

English Lessons Continue at Sneha
The volunteers of The Street Child Project were back at Sneha Child Development Centre to teach the adorable 4 and 5 year olds English. It was less chaotic than last week which enabled us to snap a few photos! Some of the kids are so smart and pick up everything we teach them - literally. This week we went one step further and taught them a little poem about a 'Little Bird'. They learned the poem in 5 minutes and recited it much to our pleasure!

First English Lesson at Sneha
The Street Child Project had its first English lesson at Sneha Child Development Centre this Saturday morning. The Centre houses 21 orphans between the ages of 1 and 5. Our volunteers taught Spoken English to the older children while the younger ones enjoyed an art & craft session. The Street Child Project has received funding to conduct lessons for the next 3 months at this Centre. It was chaos by the end of the lesson but it was a satisfying chaos for both the volunteers and kids at Sneha.

Sneha Child Development Centre
The Street Child Project is happy to annouce it has taken on its second task for the year 2014. We will be teaching English to children aged 4 and 5 at the Sneha Child Development Centre. The Sneha Child Development Centre in Colombo 4 was inaugurated on 25th November 1971. The centre houses orphans between the ages of 1 and 5. There is a pre-school and a fully equipped playground on the premises. A day care centre was built in 2004 for children from low income families in the neighbourhood, in order for parents to go out to work and make a living knowing their kids are in safe hands.
